Bookkeeper Vs An Accountant

What’s the difference?

Bookkeeper & Accountant, same same, right? No. The differences between the two are huge and can be so varied. Both work with finances and both are integral to your business. I’ve created a handy little list below so you can see who does what and why you need both.

As you can see, we work on different, but complementary, elements of your finances! It’s a top level basic list because there are some other items and not all accountants are Tax Agents. When hiring your bookkeeper and accountant make sure you do your due diligence (here are some questions you can ask a prospective bookkeeper). Each has their unique skill set and most specialise in an area they know inside out.

For example, I specialise in online retail & creative/service based businesses. Love em! I do work with other equally amazing women in biz, but those are my jam.

I like to be different, so I’m kinda in the middle of the two. I’m a degree qualified accountant so I can complete most of your end of year adjustments and generate your reports all reconciled/balanced. I can read and analyse your reports – sooo nerdy hey, but not all bookkeepers can do these things.

You will still need an accountant to provide tax strategy and lodge your tax returns because I am not a Tax Agent. The good news is, I have a few excellent accountant buddies I can refer you to, who are of course Registered Tax Agents.

They can help you with:

  • General Taxation Advice
  • Income Tax Returns
  • PAYG Tax Returns
  • Business Setup Consultations
  • Strategy / Growth
  • Analytics

I could not live without the support and advice from my Tax Agent friends!
