Lessons in Growth, Creativity and Clarity
Insights from Bonnie of Beon Media
Behind every thriving business is a story of growth, lessons learned, and the right support team helping make it all happen.
Today I am shining the spotlight on Bonnie, founder of Beon Media, a long time Accounted For You client who has built an incredible digital media agency through purpose, structure and creativity. We’ve worked alongside Bonnie for years, watching her business evolve from a solo operation to a strong, values driven team producing standout work for clients across Australia.
Bonnie recently shared with me her thoughts around her journey, the challenges of growing a creative business, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. Here are her insights, and a few takeaways every business owner can learn from.
From Freelancer to Agency Owner
For Bonnie, the leap into building Beon Media wasn’t one defining moment, but a series of small ones.
I’d been working for myself, consulting for a while, and while I loved the freedom, I kept hitting the same ceiling. There was only so much of me to go around. Clients wanted more consistency, more deliverables, more strategy. The turning point was realising that if I wanted to grow beyond one off projects and become a true partner to brands, I couldn’t do it alone
This realisation led her to start building a team – first contractors, then a core in house group. It was a shift from ‘just me’ to ‘us’ and one that gave Beon Media its own identity.
It’s a good reminder growth doesn’t always look like scaling fast. Sometimes, it’s about being strategic about when to bring others in so you can deliver the consistency your clients are craving.

Balancing Creativity and Business
Running a creative agency is no small feat! It’s part artistry, part operations, and a whole lot of juggling and planning in between.
Running a creative agency is a constant dance between the two sides of the brain. On one hand, we’re shooting, editing, writing, and designing. On the other, we’re across contracts, budgets, HR and strategy. The way I balance it is through structure. I block time in my week for deep creative direction, but I also have systems and people in place who handle the operational load.
Creative or not, this is something every business owner faces. When you create structure, it doesn’t limit creativity, it protects it.
The Not So Glamorous Bits
Behind every polished social post and client win, are the long nights and lessons no one sees.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that growth doesn’t always feel good, sometimes, it feels like chaos. Hiring the wrong fit, over-promising, juggling client fires while building internal processes, all of that can be brutal. But every challenge forces me to become sharper. I’ve learned to slow down before scaling, to hire for values not just skills, and to constantly refine our systems.
It’s refreshing honesty like this business owners need to hear more often. Growth isn’t always glamorous, but slowing down to build strong systems pays off in the long run.

Making Confident Decisions
The digital landscape changes constantly, and Bonnie’s approach to staying grounded is something all business owners can borrow from.
In digital media, things change fast. New platforms, new algorithms, new ‘must do’ trends every week. Early on, I chased everything and ended up spread thin. Now I make decisions through two filters: what aligns with our clients’ goals, and what plays to our agency’s strengths. If it doesn’t serve either of those, it’s noise.
This is a brilliant takeaway. Whether it’s marketing, operations, or growth decisions, knowing your filters for what truly matters keeps you from chasing every shiny new idea
The Power of Support Teams
Behind every successful business is a support team who are experts at what they do – and Bonnie’s perspective on this is spot on.
Behind Beon, there’s a quiet backbone of support. Mentors who I can sanity check decisions with, a bookkeeper and accountant who keep us compliant and cash flow conscious (Accounted For You and Latitude Accountants), project management tools that keep the team moving, and a network of other founders who ‘get it’. Having that infrastructure allows me to focus on leading creatively.
This is exactly what sustainable business growth looks like, knowing where your time adds the most value, and trusting others to handle the rest.

Advice For Others
If you’re thinking of starting or scaling your own agency, my biggest piece of advice is this – start building processes earlier than you think you need them. When it’s just you, it feels unnecessary. But the moment you bring on your first hire, or take on bigger clients, you’ll wish you had a playbook. Processes don’t kill creativity, they free you up to scale it.
Every business reaches a point where what got you here, won’t get you there. Processes, systems, and structure don’t limit your creativity, they let it grow with you.
Final Thoughts
Bonnie’s journey is proof that building a thriving business takes intention, structure, and support. Growth happens when you stop trying to do everything yourself and start surrounding yourself with people and systems that keep you grounded – and on track with your goals and your why.
It’s been a privilege watching Beon Media evolve, and a reminder to every business owner that clarity, creativity, and the right support team can make all the difference.
