Good Bookkeepers Vs Great Bookkeepers

The truth is, not all bookkeepers are created equal. As someone who’s been in the industry over 15 years now, I’ve worked with all sorts of businesses and have been witness to all sorts of ‘grey’ bookkeeping practises. The truth is, every bookkeeper has a different specialty and flow.  Today’s post isn’t about dissing competition (not my style at ALL) it’s more about the value you’ll see when you find yourself a great bookkeepers.

They specialise in your field

Just like any profession, bookkeepers can specialise in industries (niche). Some are all over Real Estate, some work with large corporations (me in a previous life) , some are e-commerce based (me now 😉) and some (also me!) only work with female-led businesses. Find someone who understands the ins and outs of your business so they are ready to get their hands dirty straight up.

Customised reporting

When numbers aren’t your bread and butter, pages and pages of numbers can be hard to decipher. We can work out what reporting works best for you, so you can actually use the numbers we’re crunching for you. Some like pretty graphs, some prefer a pie chart, some just want topline figures while others want all the juicy details. A great bookkeeper will work with you rather than have a one size fits all approach.

Money management

Super, BAS and Payroll are big hitting expenses. I know how much stress they can cause for small business owners so I keep on top of liabilities for my clients. We do super with you monthly, instead of quarterly, so it’s more easily managed and doesn’t hurt the bank balance so much all in one go! I can give you BAS estimates all through the quarter,so you can save as you go – having it all squirrelled away, ready to pay come BAS Due date. I’ll even analyse your weekly sales figures, so you can save a percentage of that, if that’s what you need.

Support

Being focused on women in business is an easy one for me. I feel like we’re all in this together and I’ll always put the human element of business first. It’s not just about numbers for me, it’s about being your right hand woman. Someone to shoot the breeze with, cheer you on and help you grow your business. A great bookkeeper puts relationships first and I’m chuffed at the ones I’ve fostered running AFY. We are an extension of your small business, here to help you, and ask as many questions as you need to. I want you to feel empowered & confident.

Tax Ready Figues

I’ve lost count the number of times clients have come my way after their figures just didn’t marry up at tax time, their bookkeeping mistakes were quite costly resulting in a totally unexpected giant tax bill. Or the invoice from the tax agent that quite literally cost you an arm and a leg. When I give you figures, they are ready to hand over to your accountant, all balanced and ‘accounted for you’ 😉. This saves your tax agent loads of time, and you money.

Choose A Qualified Bookkeeper

I recently had a discovery call with a potential client who was very honest (which I love), she told me the other person she was in discussions with is a VA and they could also take care of her bookkeeping.

I actually had no problem with that because you gotta do what works for you. What I do have a problem with, however, is bookkeeping being seen as an ‘anyone can do it’ industry.

Here’s what it took for me to become a full-fledged bookkeeper:

  • 3 Years of Uni
  • 1000 hrs prac time to get BAS Agent Certified
  • 15+ years of industry experience
  • continued required learning each year

Unfortunately, VA’s just don’t have those qualifications. If you’re after a great bookkeeper who will do all of the above and more, find someone qualified. Want to check if the bookkeeper (or VA) is actually registered & qualified, you can search the Tax Practitioners Board here.

If you are on the hunt for a bookkeeper who will always go over and above, I’d love to help!  You can book a free discovery call with me here
